How long do the carrots approximately grow to?

@Laura,

Thanks for your question.

There’s no straight answer to this one. It depends!

The type of carrot you planted is going to biggest determinate of how big it grows. If you’ll look on the seed packet, or do a quick Internet search for the name of the carrot variety you planted, it will typically give you a range of how big the carrot will be.

Here’s a good link to a page that has some guidelines about typically carrot sizes for types of carrots:

Hi! Your site is exteremly helpful. While I was skimming the pages, a question popped in my head. Im sure it states it on your site but I might have missed it…..

How do you know when your carrots are ready to be picked?

@Ryan,
Carrots are ready in about 75 days. This will depend on the kind you are growing. When the tops of the plant are about 12 – 15 in. high, check the root by seperating the soil lightly just enough to see if the diamiter of the carrot is about 1 in. be sure to cover the roots, protecting them from the sun.

Hi,
I cut the top of a carrot that had some green leaf on top
and I planted it in dirt and it grew from that, is that going to grow carrots or is that where the seeds come from?

We planted carrots for the first time this year. We bought plants and also put in seeds. My question is, some of the stems on the plants that we transplanted approximately two weeks ago are turning a purple/ brown color. Am I over watering?

Your website was very helpful, thank you for sharing the information.

When the carrots start growing, is it best to keep the orange part covered with dirt? I noticed one this morning and wondered if I should keep them covered.

my carrots are growing so slowly….
they seem so close to the grounds surface..
Should I add ground to them so as there’s earth over the stalks?

this is the first year i have grown my own vegetables.. I planted the carrot seeds early may. I thought my carrots were really to harest so I pulled one up and even though the top of the carrot looks ready, it is only about 9-10cm long and the carrot has got little carrots growing off the sides of it. Are they ready? and why do they look like this?

I planted my carrots a few weeks ago. I know, it’s too hot. The temperature around here is around 80 F typically. I mist them every day. Is there any chance my carrots will grow?? I also planted green onions next to them at the same time. They have started coming up (it’s been about a week).

We are growing nantes. We’ve test tasted them and they
seem very bitter. Is there something we can do, to sweet-
en them before harvesting them?

Hello, I live in northern MN and something eat the bottom of our carrots that we grew in our garden. Not sure what would do this. Any ideas?

last year I planted my first garden. When I went to harvest my carrots, I could see the orange tops of the carrots. The leaves all looked good. When I pulled them out, they were either 1/2 gone and there was an orange mush left in the hole. There were some small holes in the remaining carrot but mostly soft mush in the hole. What could this be from? thanks, J
